Resource Management

How can you verify the Duration of Activity/Project?

Published 14 June 2021

1. Estimating Duration

What is the duration of these activities?

  • Construction of Pump Foundation
  • Installation of Tower Internal
  • Electrical Cabling of Compressor

Can we accurately calculate these durations without knowing the scope of work (quantity), the number of resources, or the production rates?

The answer is obviously: No.

2. Scope of Work / Quantity

In progress review meetings, contractors often promise to "add more resources" to recover slippage. But how many resources are actually required? Can an answer be realistic without knowing the scope of work that activities are covering?

The answer is obviously: No.

3. Daily Production Rates

Clients frequently ask exactly how many meters of cable must be laid or how many inches of pipe must be welded daily to stay on plan. Can a contractor provide a reliable response without knowing the total quantity and the established norms?

The answer is obviously: No.

Resource Loading Constraints
  • 1. How should a project know the required No. of resources?
  • 2. In order to meet the planned dates, how much quantity has to be installed / constructed per day/week?
  • 3. What could be the outcome of each activity or when could an activity be assumed to be completed?

The Solution: A Fully Resource Loaded Schedule

The main bone of contention is: Why are Projects being implemented without having an effective Resource Loaded Schedule? One of the basic concepts in Schedule development is knowing each and every activity’s scope of work. The scope of work has to illustrate, at least, the following:

  • 1. The specific deliverables covered.
  • 2. The exact quantities that each activity covers
  • 3. The process required for completion of activities.
  • 4. How the activity will be certified as finished.
Defining Activity Scope

How the Projects Schedules get developed and resource loaded without knowing the activity’s scope of work?

In order to improve the chances for a successful delivery of a Project, the project team MUST know:

  1. What are the activities that have to be worked on in daily basis?
  2. How much quantity has to be installed/constructed per activity, per day?.
  3. How many resources (based on the accepted norms) have to be assigned to the activities?
  4. The progress curves have to be based on the amount of work Planned and Completed.
  5. The team MUST know that the Duration of activities DO NOT necessarily represent the amount of work of activities.
  6. What is your answer to the questions above?
