How can you verify the Duration of Activity/Project?

How can you verify the Duration of Activity/Project?

What is the Duration of these activities:?

  • Construction of Pump Foundation
  • Installation of Tower Internal
  • Electrical Cabling of Compressor

Can we estimate / calculate the durations without knowing the scope of work (quantity), No. of resources, Production rate of the resources, etc.?

The answer obviously is: No.

In a progress review meeting, the Client enquires as regards late activities and how the slippage could be recovered? The contractor, responds by implying that they will add more resources on these activities and will catch-up!

How many resources should have been assigned to these activities? Would the answer be realistic without knowing the scope of work/ quantity of the activities?

The answer is obviously: No.

The Client then enquires, (for example) how much cable should be laid or how much ID should be welded per day in order to complete the cabling or welding activities as planned? Could the contractor provide reliable response without knowing the quantity and Norms?

The answer is obviously: No

How should a project know the required No. of resources?

In order to meet the planned dates, how much quantity has to be installed / constructed per day/week?

What could be the outcome of each activity or when could an activity be assumed to be completed?

Isn’t the answer to the above questions a Fully resource loaded Schedule?

The main bone of contention is: Why are Projects being implemented without having an effective Resource Loaded Schedule? One of the basic concepts in Schedule development is knowing each and every activity’s scope of work. The scope of work has to illustrate, at least, the following:

  1. What is/are deliverables that each activity covers?
  2. What is/are the quantity that each activity covers?
  3. What is the process that each activity has to go through until its rendered complete?
  4. When and how should an activity be certified as completed?

How the Projects Schedules get developed without knowing the activity’s scope of work and resource loading is quite baffling?

In order to improve the chances for a successful delivery of a Project, the project team MUST know:

  1. What are the activities that have to be worked on in daily basis?
  2. How much quantity has to be installed/constructed per activity, per day?
  3. How many resources (based on the accepted norms) have to be assigned to the activities?
  4. The progress curves have to be based on the amount of work Planned and Completed.
  5. The team MUST know that the Duration of activities DO NOT necessarily represent the amount of work of activities.

What is your answer to the questions above?

If you would like to learn the Integrated Planning System including resource loading, PMS development and EVM/ES or wanted to implement it on your Projects then contact us now: info@khonopc.com

IIn Resource loading you will learn how to calculate the budgeted units based on 2 construction scenarios, how to develop the resource sheet correctly, how to calculate the number of recourses, develop S-Curve and many more. Then, in PMS you will learn how to calculate W.V, how the PMS links to a resource loaded schedule and how to roll up the progresses from lowest level to the highest. And finally, you will know if you have a resource loaded schedule and PMS the EVM becomes very easy, we will implement the EVM with its all related charts, graphs and interesting analysis for several scenarios. Do not miss this opportunity!
