S-Curve, Duration, Physical% Complete

S-Curve, Duration, Physical% Complete

Most of the requests that we receive to review a project’s Planning system are initiated by the Project Managers. This is after a realization that what gets produced as Progress Reports, is not reflecting the Project’s reality. To review, we require Schedules (BL and updated) and Progress Reports. On most of those Projects, the Planner had used Duration in one shape or another to produce an S-Curve!
What is the meaning of an S-Curve Based on Duration? It means the Distribution of Cumulative Duration (calculated in percentage) over the Project’s Duration.
Then, the Actual progress (Physical% Complete) is added and reported as though the Schedule is ahead or behind the Planned Curve?!
This is not a Planning system that adds value but is pure nonsense that gets issued as the Project’s Progress report. We should know that any snaky shaped lines cannot be considered as the Project S-Curve. To get to the right shape, it requires many upfront developments which many practitioners are not capable of achieving. It does not require rocket science to determine why Projects are failing, check at what is happening on your back yard.
